Tipu conducted negotiations with the Nizam in the First Mysore War so well
that the Nizam gave him the title Fateh Ali Khan

In the last campaign of the First Mysore War, Tipu went as far as Madras
and plundered the houses of Madras councillors at St. Thomas

Tipur also participated in the Mysore-Maratha War (1769-1772)

When his father Haidar died in 1782 Tipu inherited a large kingdom; it
stretched 400 mi. from the Krishna R. all the way down to Dindigal, and
300 mi. from the eastern Ghats to Malabar
